Liverpool are now favourites to win the Europa League after their 3-0 victory over Villarreal semi-final second leg at Anfield. The win meant Jurgen Klopp’s team recorded a 3-1 aggregate victory over the Spanish side.
They will now face another La Liga side Sevilla in the Europa League final on 18th May in Basel. Sevilla made it to the final courtesy of 5-3 aggregate win over Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in the semi-finals.
Sevilla are currently seventh in La Liga after a poor run of form that has seen the Andalusians pick-up just one win from their last six outings in the Spanish top-flight. Unai Emery’s side are in danger of even missing out on European qualification for next season.
Liverpool are starting to display some of the attributes of Jurgen Klopp’s successful Dortmund teams. The Reds are now pressing teams high up the pitch, meaning that opposition teams are given very time and space to build up their own attacks.
This style worked perfectly for Klopp at Dortmund and there are signs that the Liverpool players have fully bought into the German’s style. The Reds have started to produce some impressive displays in the past few months and will be difficult stop in the final.
Despite Sevilla’s recent poor run of form they will not be easy opponents, as they are reigning champions. In fact the Spanish side have won the trophy in the past two seasons, so a third consecutive win would be incredible.
The Europa League final promises to be an interesting clash, but on current form Jurgen Klopp’s team have to be seen as favourites to take home the trophy to Merseyside.
